A Working Pantry

Choose your favorites to have on hand, and go organic whenever possible-

fruits: Granny Smith apples, bananas, tangerines, lemons, limes, grapefruit, peach, plum, rhubarb, figs, grapes, berries, apricots, persimons

sweets: pure maple syrup, raw & unheated honey, Kurlu sweetener, NOW brand stevia glycerite drops
dried dates, organic raisins, prunes, figs, etc. 100% fruit spreads

vegetables: tomatoes, green onion, onion, leeks, garlic, mushroom, asparagus, artichokes, broccoli, cabbage, eggplant, romaine or red leaf lettuce, mustard greens or collards, cilantro, parsley, celery, zucchini, cucumber, carrots, peppers, white and sweet potatoes, summer and winter squash, turnips, beets, cauliflower, ginger,etc.
(savory fruits) Organic canned tomatoes, bottled kalamata olives, canned black olives

sea vegetables: dulse, kelp, wakame, hijiki, arami, nori

teas : green or red tea (Rooibos), chamomile, ginger Teeccino ‘coffee’ substitute, Traditional Medicinal or Yogi blend teas for coughs, colds, PMS, detox, etc.

beans: organic beans: black, aduki, kidney, garbanzo, mung or white– dry or canned (no refined salt).

bread and pasta: kamut or spelt bread, Ezekiel sprouted bread, organic sourdough bread, sourdough rye; organic rice, artichoke, corn, buckwheat, or kombu pasta; corn tortillas, polenta

grains and seeds: quinoa, buckwheat, organic rolled oats, organic white basmati rice, organic brown rice, barley, millet: flax seed, chia seed, hemp seed, pumpkin seed and butter; hemp milk, rice milk, oat milk

baking: Organic vanilla or almond extract, carob powder, Rumford baking powder, King Arthur flour, organic cornmeal or rolled oats, sea salt

nuts: only raw nuts– walnuts, pecans, pinons, almonds and raw almond butter, almond milk

oils: cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and refrigerated oils of organic flax, coconut, sesame, pumpkin seed, hemp seed, walnut or a blend of good oils.

spices: cinnamon, nutmeg, paprika, chili powder, turmeric, cumin, basil, oregano, celery seed, dill seed, cayenne, red pepper flakes; plus organic spice blends of Curry, Garam Marsala, Chinese five spice, Berbere, Thai, Fajita, Szechwan, Jamaican Jerk Blends (see resources)
Herbamare salt, Celtic salt: large crystals w/moisture, and fine ground

meat: organic, free-range chicken and poultry, grass-fed beef, lamb, goat; wild-caught salmon, mahi, etc. Preservative-free, sliced roast beef or turkey breast. Canned tuna in water.

dairy: organic, free-range eggs, organic ghee, organic butter. organic whole milk yogurt, BGH-free cheese aged over 100 days, raw milk

miscellaneous: Organic stoneground mustard, Hain safflower mayonnaise, organic ketchup, horseradish, preservative and color-free pickles, organic pickle relish, organic salsas, Bragg’s Liquid Aminos, shoyu “soy” sauce, organic balsamic vinegar, apple cider vinegar, low-salt non-GMO organic rice or barley miso

chips, crackers, etc.:  avoid –chips are fried, oils are all oxidized, refined salt, etc.

Read labels. If it has “salt”, harmful oils, sugar, additives, preservatives, or chemicals –don’t buy it!

  • USDA/FDA data on produce items most likely to have harmful pesticides: grapes, strawberries, apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, nectarines, peaches, potatoes, raspberries, spinach
  • Raisins and peanuts each contain residues of over 200 pesticides and herbicides = always go organic.
